A threshold changes the pace.
A dark stone threshold gives onto a covered walkway: flat slabs laid across shallow water, carved figures keeping watch on either side. The sound of the lane ends here.
That is the character of the house — a sequence you are led through rather than shown, each part with its own relationship to light and planting.
One line of water, and everything around it.
Jade tile runs the length of the timber deck, the planting pressed close along its far edge. Everything else in the house is arranged around this one line of water.
Timber returns throughout — the charred screens outside, the ceilings and floors within. Stone gives the entrance its weight; linen, rattan and teak give the rooms their warmth.
